Hot Summer Bass Secrets
Here's a RealBass.com tip to help produce a few more dog days of summer bass.
Tie on a 3-4 inch rubber shad/minnow onto your line about 2-3 feet above the tag end (the tag end is the end of the line with nothing tied to it after you tie on your hook).
Next tie on a second hook and 5-7 inch rubber shad/minnow onto the tag end. Cast this out into the water unweighted, and let the lures sink about 2-3 feet. Jerk jerk jerk the rod tip and reel in about 10 feet of line while jerking the rod tip.
Pause to let the lures sink, then jerk jerk jerk the rod tip and reel in 10 feet while jerkin the rod tip. Repeat this process back to the boat or bank.
This presentaion gives the impression of a larger fish chasing the smaller fish. Big hungry bass HATE to see smaller fish eatting while they are not. The bass will go after the larger minnow lure out of anger and BAMM! You've got him!
This tactic works great over weed beds, around laydowns, boulders, rip rap banks, and its GREAT if bass are busting shad on the surface. Primarily a late summer into early fall tactic when bass are aggressive, it also works wonders on bedding bass if you let the two lures slowly sink into the nest.
NOTE: While it's possible to hook into double largemouths with this tactic, it's very very possible and most likley to attract DOUBLE smallmouth hookups. I've had many double smallies on this rig and boy oh boy, talk about some water crashing fun?
Give this technique a try when things are slow, just hold your rod tight!
NOTE 2: Many tournaments prohibit the use of this rig for obvious reasons. Make sure to check your tourney rules if you want to use it in a tournament. Some localities and states may also prohibit the use. Know your rules!
