Derek Remitz – a Minnesotan turned Alabaman by way of Texas – is one of the great stories to emerge during the 2007 season. He won the Bassmaster Elite Series opener at Amistad, finished 2nd in the following California Delta event, and went on the lead every edition of the BassFan Rookie of the Year Race this year. In this newest edition, which factors in the Potomac River Elite Series, he benefits from his 19th-place finish there and extends his lead over Casey Ashley to a little less than 30 points.
Keep in mind that last year, the Race lead shifted hands many times, and Jared Lintner won by a little more than 7 points. So the Remitz reign this season is nothing short of remarkable.
Here's a look at how Remitz has finished in the regular season so far this year:
Potomac River: 19th
Erie/Niagara: 66th
Lake Champlain: 104th
Grand Lake: 20th
Smith Mt.: 56th
Guntersville: 80th
Clarks Hill: 5th
Clear Lake: 75th
California Delta: 2nd
Lake Amistad: 1
The FLW Tour season's over, and only one BASS regular-season event remains (Toho in September), so Remitz appears to be a lock to win the title of best true rookie in all of fishing.
Ashley finished 35th at the Potomac and remains in 2nd.
Matt Sphar, after his 46th-place finish at the Potomac, remains in 3rd.
Bryan Thrift, who fishes the FLW Tour, benefits from movement around him and climbs four spots into 4th. Thrift finished his season on a strong note with his 5th at the Forrest Wood Cup, but that event doesn't factor into the Rookie Race.
BASS rookies Jason Williamson (44th), Scott Campbell (45th), and Marty Robinson (58th) each drop one spot after the Potomac to 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively in the Rookie Race.
James Niggemeyer's 16th-place finish at the Potomac moves him up a spot to 8th.
Bryan Hudgins finished near-last at the Potomac and falls two spots to 9th.
